Melanie, alum of FIRST® LEGO® League “Dream Team” and “Agapē,” as well as FIRST® Robotics Competition Team 9213 “Tecuani,” has dedicated her life to expanding the boundaries of STEAM and sharing it with her community. Now pursuing a degree in Clinical Psychology, Melanie is seeking to bridge the gap between psychology and STEAM to connect people with robots in a meaningful way.
Keep reading to learn how Melanie is giving back to FIRST®, her students, and her local community through STEAM.

FIRST Staff: Can you share some information about your current role at Universidad de Monterrey (UDEM) and EmpoderaSTEM?
Melanie: At UDEM, I am pursuing a degree in Clinical Psychology with a strong interest in research and neuropsychology. Through EmpoderaSTEM, I work alongside my team to bring science and technology education to underserved communities, encouraging young people (especially girls and women) to see themselves in STEAM. As a FIRST volunteer, I actively support teams and events, giving back to the community that has been so important in shaping my journey.
FIRST Staff: What is your favorite part of your current role as a student, EmpoderaSTEM member, and volunteer?
Melanie: My favorite part is building bridges between psychology and STEAM, showing that science and technology go far beyond building robots. From research to outreach, there are countless ways to get involved. What I enjoy most is watching young people discover their potential and realize that they, too, belong in STEAM. That moment of empowerment is the most rewarding part of what I do.
FIRST Staff: What is the hardest part of your job?
Melanie: The most challenging part is balancing my studies, outreach projects, and volunteer commitments. Still, these obstacles have taught me resilience, discipline, and the value of asking for help when needed. The hardest parts often bring the greatest lessons and remind me of why I want to serve others.

FIRST Staff: How do you use STEAM skills in your everyday work/life?
Melanie: I apply STEAM skills daily. Psychology gives me the science of understanding people, while robotics taught me teamwork, problem-solving, and innovation. These combined skills help me design thoughtful projects, mentor students, and connect education with real-life impact. Whether in research, service, or mentoring, STEAM guides me on how I approach challenges and solutions.
FIRST Staff: Can you share your thoughts on the impact of your personal/professional work in STEAM?
Melanie: On Team 9213 “Tecuani,” I led social impact projects that brought STEAM opportunities to different communities. Later, on Team 6017 “Cyberius,” I continued this work as a mentor. Today, through EmpoderaSTEM and my role as a FIRST volunteer, I focus on making STEAM available for everyone. By reaching local communities and empowering girls in STEM, I work to challenge stereotypes and open doors for future scientists and innovators.
My goal is to show that science and technology are tools for everyone to transform their lives and communities.
FIRST Staff: Who is a “Person of STEAM” who inspires you?
Melanie: I am deeply inspired by Woodie Flowers, whose kindness created a movement that transformed my life and the lives of countless others. I truly cannot imagine my journey without FIRST. Woodie’s kindness and belief in Gracious Professionalism® taught me that how we work together is just as important as what we build.
I am also inspired by my friends who actively participate in FIRST and encourage me to keep going. Their passion, dedication, and teamwork inspire me and remind me every day why I continue to be part of this community.

FIRST Staff: If you could give one piece of advice to your younger self, what would it be?
Melanie: Believe in yourself and try new things, even if they scare you. That is where growth begins. Entering a new world can feel intimidating, but you belong there. Trust yourself and remember that believing in your potential is the first step to making it real. Do not be afraid to make mistakes, build new friendships, and trust the process; this journey will change your life.
FIRST Staff: Do you have a message you want to share for students who are participating in FIRST today?
Melanie: FIRST is more than robots; it is a journey of growth, resilience, and friendship. Take every challenge as a chance to learn and remember that the impact you create goes far beyond competition. The skills and connections you make here will stay with you for life, and I say this as someone who met their best friends through FIRST.
