This article was developed in collaboration between FIRST® Staff, FIRST® Tech Challenge Team 25955, “Women of the Wires,” and FIRST® Robotics Competition Team 3847, “Spectrum.” 

We are thrilled to welcome our qualifying teams, volunteers, family members, mentors, sponsors, and other FIRST® friends from around the globe to the 2025 FIRST® Championship presented by BAE Systems in Houston this April! This annual event unites more than 50,000 people with a passion for science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics in an unforgettable experience of competition, collaboration, and celebration – in a city with a legacy of innovation and rich culture.  

This blog serves as a guide which has been curated with insights from our very own FIRST community, including special insights from Houston-based FIRST® Tech Challenge Team 25955, “Women of the Wires” and FIRST® Robotics Competition Team 3847, “Spectrum.” They have shared their top recommendations for must-see attractions, hidden gems, and the best local food spots to help you make the most of your visit. Downtown Houston – Innovation & Iconic Landmarks  

History and culture, iconic architecture, and Instagram-worthy moments.  

Downtown Houston is a hub of history, innovation, and breathtaking cityscapes. From sprawling parks to architectural wonders, this area is packed with must-visit spots perfect for exploration, relaxation, delicious food, and Instagram-worthy moments:  

  • Discovery Green - A vibrant 12-acre urban park featuring seasonal events, live performances, and public art.  
    • We recommend visiting at night to see this beautiful space lit up, or during the day to enjoy the greenery, relax, and do some fun people-watching! - Team “Women of the Wires”  
  • Buffalo Bayou Park & The Cistern - Enjoy scenic trails or take a guided tour of this eerie and beautiful underground reservoir-turned-art space.  
  • Market Square Park - A charming historic park surrounded by top-rated restaurants and coffee shops.  
  • Post HTX - A former post office transformed into a futuristic food hall and art space with the best skyline views of Houston.  
    • This is in the old Houston Post Office, but it has been renovated as an International Food Court and a Music Hall. It is worth the walk! The Post is one of our favorites because of the international food and fun dessert places. - Team “Women of the Wires”

Montrose and The Heights are known for their eclectic mix of art, shopping, and historic charm. Whether you are hunting for vintage treasures, admiring street art, or soaking in a peaceful art exhibit, these neighborhoods are full of personality and surprises.  

  • The Menil Collection & Rothko Chapel - A peaceful art haven featuring surreal modern pieces with free admission.  
  • Heights Mercantile & 19th Street - A charming district filled with local boutiques, vintage stores, and unique home goods.  
  • Houston Graffiti Park - A colorful, ever-changing street art destination perfect for snapping a unique pic for your Instagram story.  
  • 100% Taquito – What started as an Entrepreneurship Program student project at the University of Houston, has now expanded yet maintains its authentic Mexico City street food culture.
