Build The Future Spotlight: Team Zebracorns

Engineering Innovative Solutions to Advance Communities Through Hardships

Program: FIRST Robotics Competition
Location: North Carolina, United States

The Zebracorns are a diverse group of students from across North Carolina, most prominently from the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics (NCSSM). Our team believes that by engineering smart and innovative solutions, we can directly affect people’s lives through “accepting the greater challenge,” a motto we live by every day.

For example, at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, we pulled together a COVID engineering group to work with community organizations in engineering and helped supply approximately 100 face shields for local medical facilities while the global healthcare supply chain was overwhelmed.

This year, we’ve used technical and professional skills developed in FIRST® programs to provide engineering solutions to support community members in saving and protecting local bee populations. We’re finding other ways to empower ourselves through STEM, too, such as connecting with professors and surgeons to help design injury-prevention footwear for seniors. Our work in technology and STEM has shown us that we can use our minds to make a real difference in our local communities and even around the world.
