Build the Future Spotlight: Team Mechanical Bulls

Spreading the Impact of STEM Around The World

Program: FIRST Robotics Competition
Location: New York, United States

For the last 20 years, Smithtown Robotics has always sought to make a difference. We know FIRST® is more than the engineering skills it teaches: It’s about problem-solving through engineering, leadership and community involvement, and we hope to train these skills into other students so they can change the world, no matter what field they go into.

Our pioneering initiative, Operation Connect, helps develop FIRST® Tech Challenge Teams in South Africa, and has made such an impact that we are expanding to mentor four new teams this season. We spend countless hours mentoring younger students in our district’s FIRST® LEGO® League teams, and we established a project called Operation Shield to help essential workers by 3D-printing and delivering medical supplies to businesses and hospitals.

We also work with our local branch of Make-A-Wish Foundation to brighten the lives of less fortunate children through the creation of gift baskets with 3D-printed toys. These experiences represent what we believe it means to be a force for change: not only inspiring our community through the advancement of STEM but doing all that we can to recognize the importance of robotics in changing the world.
