Mental well-being is an important part of every young person’s journey. Today’s students face many pressures both inside and outside of school, and coaches, mentors, volunteers, and parents all play an important role in creating a supportive environment.
According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, 1 in 6 youth between the ages of 13 and 18 experience a serious mental health condition, and suicide remains the third leading cause of death among young people ages 15–24. These numbers underscore the importance of compassion, awareness, and proactive support by caring adults.
To help, FIRST has developed a Mental Health Resources document with guidance and links to organizations dedicated to youth mental health issues. This document is designed to provide coaches, mentors, teams, participants, and the wider community with tools to support young people when they need it most.
By fostering an environment that prioritizes mental well-being, FIRST teams can create environments where everyone thrives. Adults working with youth are encouraged to start conversations, share resources, and take proactive steps to ensure all participants feel supported.
Together, we can uplift our FIRST community and create a positive experience for every participant.
